Different Weather, Different Shoes

Every year it happens. Parents get stumped about what shoes to put their new walkers in once the weather heats up. Then they go shopping or look online and the choices are overwhelming. If this is happening in your house, I’m here to help!

What to Look For

My number one piece of advice about buying sandals for new walkers: they need to be closed-toed. If they’re open-toed, that little bit of sole that pokes out from under their feet is a tripping hazard. It can get caught on uneven surfaces or thresholds and the next thing you know, your little toddler is doing a face plant.

There are other things to look for too. (If you’re a patient of mine you’ve heard much of this before with regards to buying shoes in general.) Here are the additional characteristics I would recommend you look for:

  • A stiff heel cup. If you push down on the back of the shoe and it collapses, it’s not supportive enough.
  • A wide toe box. Those little toes and muscles need room to move and develop.
  • A Velcro strap at the top near the ankle. This helps with stability for a new walker.
  • The ability to bend at the spot where the toes meet the foot. While a solid sole is important, it needs to be flexible.
  • A straight-lasted (not curvy) sole. You should be able to trace a straight line from the middle of the toe-box to the middle of the heel.

With regard to brands, StrideRite, Tottering Toddlers, See Kai Run, and Keens stock some great models. There are other options out there too, but these seem to be the most consistent.

(Quick note: If your little one’s feet/ankles roll in, they might need more support than the above recommendations will provide. I’m happy to evaluate their little feet for this in the clinic.)

So there you go! If you’ve got a new walker in your life and are ready to get out into the summer sunshine, hopefully this advice will help. Please reach out if you have any questions. And don’t forget, if you’re concerned about how your little one is walking, or if they’re having a hard time reaching this milestone, I can help with that too!

Enjoy the Sunshine,
Katie
